About The Founder
Bettering Me Counseling Services was born from a journey of personal resilience and the desire to bring authentic representation to the mental health field. Monte Foreman-Powell, our founder, served as a combat veteran in the U.S. Army, completing a tour in Afghanistan. After facing his own challenges with PTSD and Major Depressive Disorder, Monte found strength in his journey of healing—thanks in large part to the support of his husband and the transformative power of therapy.
Monte hadn’t planned on becoming a therapist. But through his own path to recovery, he recognized a deep need for representation—an African American, queer, veteran voice in the counseling world. He wanted to create a space where others with similar experiences could see themselves reflected and feel understood.
That vision led him to found Bettering Me Counseling Services. The name “Bettering Me” is a daily reminder that personal growth starts today, not tomorrow. Monte’s belief is that a better you starts the moment you decide to take that first step, and that’s the heart of our BMST—Bettering Me Starts Today—philosophy.
We invite you to join the BMST movement and start your journey with us. And if you’d like to carry that message with you, feel free to check out our BMST apparel in our shop.
